World Cup public holiday, Ailidh still at School, so with the weather set to be great, I decided to head for a few Corbetts around Drumochter.
Starting with the pair beside Dalnaspidal Lodge, I parked up beside the level crossing and followed the signs past the buildings. Just before the second bridge I headed west along a well made track. Around a kilometer later I ignored the track heading to the right, and instead struck off the track about 200m later along a faint path.
After a while the path disappeared so I just headed directly north west uphill, then closer to the top, turning north, eventually reaching the Sow of Atholl Corbett in around an hour. The going pretty easy, but the heat made it a bit tougher today. Views all around to most of the Drumochter Munros.
I retraced my steps all the way back to the bridge, then straight on towards the dam, which had a small bridge and a few gates to negotiate. The ascent started quite gently, but once past the field gate, it got a little steeper, but tough today in the heat and being quite boggy in places. Once reaching the plateau I headed west then south over a gentle but very boggy slope to the summit of the second Corbett of the day, Meall na Leitreach.
After stopping to have lunch and take in the views I retracted my steps arriving back at the car sometime after 1pm. My legs still had a few miles in them, so decided to head to another Corbett towards Kinloch Rannoch via Trinafour, around a 20 minute drive.
From the small car park, I headed through a gate and across a field towards another very unused gate which I had to climb over. I used the path up the hill to the north for a short distance before striking off very steeply straight uphill, later easing, but tough heather bashing and further on some peat hags to negotiate, none of which were on the Walkhighlands description.
The mile or so to the bottom of Meall nan Eun was tough going and felt much further, the ascent up to the ridge was welcome relief. Once over the summit of Meall nan Eun, I followed the at times rocky ridge around to the south to the final ascent of the third and last Corbett of the day, Beinn a' Chuallaich. Note that the trig point is not the top, it is the large cairn a few metres further on.
I had another larger break and decided I couldn't face returning the same way, so instead decided on the circuit described on Walkhighlands. Heading south down the ridge, I could only pick out a faint trail at times and closer to the small hill, Tor na Cabar, I could find no trace of the old stalkers path. Instead I contoured around the hill until eventually finding a path lower down around the 500m level. This trail eventually led all the way down to the road, via a couple of gates and a field in front of a cottage.
Once on the road, I took the turn off to the right and walked along the at times busy road back to the car. Once changed and finished the now ritual brew up, it was time for the long drive home.
