We stayed in Inverness overnight, and headed down early towards Glen Shiel with the plan to head up A' Chraileag and Mullach Fraoch-choire. However, as we approached the start we could see there had be a fresh dump of snow, putting these Munros outwith our ability. Turning around we headed back towards the great glen for our backup plan, the Loch Lochy Munros.
From the car park we followed the Great Glen way for a few kilometres before striking off west steeply uphill through the trees. Once past the trees the incline reduces and we followed the path, quite wet in places until we eventually reached the bealach between the two Munros.
We decided to tackle the southern one first, Meall na Teanga. The path drops a little over some boggy ground, then rises steeply before contouring around Meall Dudh on a very boggy path. When we reached the bealach between Meall Dubh and the Munro, we had to put on our spikes before making the attempt.
After making some way up, we headed west along the steep slope trying to make for the ridge, but the snow became very icy and as we only have mini crampons, we decided to bail. On the way back to the bealach we saw some walkers come down the far side trying to avoid the steeper sections of snow, but as we saw them fall a few times, we decided not to make an attempt further west.
Once back at the bealach between the two Munros, the wind had really picked up, so we decided to leave the other Munro as well, even though the slopes looked like they had much less snow. Somehow in our minds coming back for two would be better than that for one.
