Weather looked ok and really wanted out for a hike, but my usual walking partner not available, so up and out early myself for the drive up past Inverness and Garve, parking up at the Ben Wyvis car park just before 9am.
Taking the usual path, I headed up following the Allt a' Bhealaich Mhòir before taking the winding path up towards An Cabar. As with our previous hike, it was pretty breezy on the higher sections. From here it was a quick half hour trek to the summit of Ben Wyvis, unfortunately a few drizzly showers and a little overcast at the top, where I had an early lunch.
Heading north the bealach Tom a Choinnich is soon reached, I had intended making a direct line towards the depression marked 796m on the map to the NE, but up close I didn't like the look of the peat bog, so headed up a faint trail contouring around the dip to join the intended path.
Bearing east, I headed towards the next high point, and saw my first pair of kites circling overhead, unfortunately my camera phone isn't very good past x2 zoom. I kept north of the 910m point, skirting Coire Locahain, no trail until reaching the small plateau before the ascent to the Munro Top of Glas Leathad Beag.
After a short break, it was back the way I came to ascend the last Munro Top of the day Tom a' Choinnich, the views north and west today really good, including Ben Hope.
A lot of guides say to head straight down south west instead of heading north west to Carn Gorm, on hindsight I think this is a mistake. There is no clear path that I found, and the trail all the way back to the forest roads is lots of tiring heather bashing.
The cleared section of forest was pretty grim, lots of branches, hidden holes, one I disappeared in nearly up to my waist and to top it off, it started raining! I somehow missed the turning to the south and ended up taking the path out past the disused quarry and had to walk alongside the road back to the car, which wasn't ideal in the fading light.
Even though the return hike wasn't that great, it was still a pretty good day out. After getting changed and a nice hot cuppa, it was off on the long drive home.
