Summits (M) Meall Chuaich

Not having been out walking for a few weeks due to various commitments and being full of the cold, we decided to plump for a short singleton, Meall Chuaich. We arrived around 8:30am and luckily managed to be squeeze into layby 94.

The walk in to the base of the Munro was pretty straightforward, following along the aqueduct for a couple of kilometres before crossing a bridge and past the Cuaich hydro power station. After crossing another bridge we kept left to follow the track towards Loch Cuaich, then taking a right shortly before the loch which heads on past a wooden bothy.

Not far past the bothy we crossed another bridge, then at the first corner of the track we took the track heading up a pretty eroded path to climb up Stac Meall Chuaich. We took a break on the first bump to refuel before heading up the pretty easy path, with only a couple of very short wet sections. However, the higher we climbed, the stronger the wind got.

Towards the top of Stac Meall Chuaich, there is an option to skip the top and instead head west towards the Munro. After the initial push, there is a rockier section where the path becomes indistinct, but was easy enough to pick up by continuing upwards. Once on the wide top, the summit of Meall Chuaich was easy to locate as the cairn is pretty big.

Once we took the obligatory photos, we took shelter from the strong winds to have a break and enjoy the great, although today, hazy views.

We returned via the same route, and felt the wind getting worse as we descended, I suspect we might have turned back if it had been that bad earlier on.
